What OpenAI’s latest controversy tells us about the future of math

OpenAI announced that its AI agents solved the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of mathematics' seven Millennium Prize Problems, but the announcement has been overshadowed by accusations that the company failed to credit NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic employee Levent Alpöge whose prior work may have influenced the solution. The achievement, accomplished in days using 10,000 concurrent agents at a cost of millions, raises fundamental questions about the future of mathematical research as resource-intensive AI solutions by private companies potentially displace human mathematicians and the collaborative, iterative processes that have historically driven mathematical progress.
