Siltation threatens national dams
Siltation accumulation is threatening Lesotho's dams, with Rasebale Dam in Mafeteng severely affected during the 2024 drought, prompting authorities to deploy a dredging machine to remove approximately 900,000 cubic metres of sediment. The Water and Sewage Company and government have warned that major reservoirs including Metolong and Katse dams are experiencing significant siltation due to soil erosion, and have committed to implementing a coordinated maintenance programme for all national dams.
