Sakoane accused of using Monapathi’s benefits to clean up judicial mess

Chief Justice Sakoane Sakoane is accused of withholding retired judge Tšeliso Monapathi's terminal benefits until he completes 128 outstanding cases, with the Court of Appeal hearing arguments on whether the Chief Justice has legal authority to do so. Justice Monapathi's lawyer argues the benefits should not be held hostage and that completing judgments is a separate issue from receiving retirement dues, with the court expected to deliver judgment on 13 November 2026.
