The Lesotho government has ordered the shutdown of the Health Maintenance Project Implementing Unit (HM-PIU) effective 30 September 2026, which currently maintains 226 clinics and hospitals serving over 1.3 million Basotho. The closure threatens approximately 5,000 jobs across 111 contractors and 70 unit staff, with no clear transition plan in place to transfer maintenance responsibilities for water, power, sewerage, waste management and ICT systems to other government departments.
