Making every Loti count for Lesotho’s future
Dr Bjorn Lomborg advocates for Lesotho to adopt cost-benefit analysis to maximize the impact of limited government budgets on development priorities including education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure. A regional initiative in July 2024 will train over 140 policy analysts from eight Southern African countries, including 21 Lesothan delegates, to apply evidence-based economic analysis to policy decisions.
Lesiba says: Cost-benefit analysis offers Lesotho a rational framework for allocating scarce resources to interventions with the highest social returns, though implementation requires political will and transparency to resist entrenched interests. The approach's strength lies in making trade-offs explicit and evidence-based, yet must be coupled with genuine democratic deliberation about Lesotho's values and priorities.
