AI’s recursive self-improvement might not come so quickly after all

A new study from Princeton University researchers found that AI agents lack the creativity and judgment needed for open-ended AI research, despite being capable of engineering tasks required for research. The findings suggest that timelines for achieving recursive self-improvement through AI automation may be overestimated, as current models struggle with novel hypothesis generation, methodology revision, and conceptual flexibility.
